Cultural and Historic Preservation Conference
The Eastern States Archaeological Federation will join Salve Regina's Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program for a special joint conference Thursday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 10. "The Critical Concerns of Preservation" will explore the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy as they relate to preservation and archaeological studies.
Historic preservation intersects with social justice as it strives to help communities both celebrate and confront their pasts. Preservation is moving towards a more socially engaged and merciful viewpoint that emphasizes the diversity of past human experience. The 2024 conference will explore the following themes:
- Immigration and immigrant experiences
- Earth, environmentalism and the natural world
- Nonviolence and the effects of conflict
- Race and racism
- Women and gender
The conference is free for current Salve Regina students, faculty and staff.

Keynote Speaker: Rebecca Bertrand
The Noreen Stonor Drexel Cultural and Historic Preservation Program is pleased to welcome Rebecca Bertrand, executive director of the Newport Historical Society (NHS), to deliver this year's keynote address: "Preservation for the Present: Reimagining Institutions as Instruments for Remembrance and Change."
On the cusp of 2026, the semiquincentennial of the founding of the nation, the NHS is embarking on a transformational journey. This keynote will address how the NHS is actively re-examining the narratives it presents to the public. As a nonprofit organization founded in 1854 to preserve and interpret the history of Newport County, the NHS is working to actively move beyond a singular historical viewpoint to acknowledge and explore the stories often silenced.
