Laboratories
Cultural and Historic Preservation
Our students are encouraged to make extensive use of two laboratory spaces in Salve Regina's Antone Academic Center: the Community Preservation Laboratory and the Preservation Research Studio.
Creation of the Antone Academic Center involved the unique restoration, renovation and union of two nationally historic and significant carriage house and stables complexes - Wetmore Hall, the original carriage house and stables for Chateau-sur-Mer, and Mercy Hall, the original carriage house and stables for Ochre Court. In 2006, the building was designated a National Historic Landmark as part of the Chateau-sur-Mer estate.
Community Preservation Laboratory
As a hands-on vocation, preservation involves a great deal of fieldwork but also requires an equal investment of time in the laboratory, constructing digital drawings and models, analyzing artifacts and creating maps.
Our dedicated laboratory features the latest equipment and software used by professional preservationists. Additionally, all of the artifacts from our archaeological excavations are processed and analyzed here.
Students have access to technology for digital graphic design, three-dimensional scanning, computerized architectural documentation, photogrammetry and geographic information systems (GIS). The laboratory also houses our geophysical equipment, including ground-penetrating radar and electrical resistivity meter.
Preservation Research Studio
One of our classrooms in the Antone Academic Center doubles as the workspace for students conducting individual preservation research as part of internships, independent studies or thesis research. Students have access to our vast research library, drafting tables and a growing collection of historic building elements.
