Biology and Biomedical Sciences
Academic Department
The Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences provides students with the scientific knowledge and the ethical understanding to stand as responsible stewards of the earth. With evolution as an organizing concept, our programs develop the skills necessary for critical and creative thinking, thoughtful and careful analysis, and sound judgment.
We provide students with a hands-on approach to the exploration of scientific methods. These important skills are needed to advance one's scientific knowledge and, moreover, are critical in preparing students for the challenge of exciting careers in the biological sciences.
Programs
Biology (B.S., B.A., Minor)
Our student-centered bachelor's degree in biology explores the diversity of modern biology through dynamic classroom instruction, practical laboratory experimentation, exciting research opportunities and field study in Aquidneck Island's living laboratory.
Biology and Secondary Education (B.A.S.)
Our bachelor’s degree in biology and secondary education prepares students to apply for Rhode Island teacher certification for grades 7-12. To complete the requirements necessary for general science certification, students complete additional coursework in physics.
Medical Laboratory Sciences (B.S.)
Salve Regina University's medical laboratory sciences program develops the knowledge and technical skills needed to understand, perform and evaluate tests and procedures carried out in hospitals, clinics and laboratories. Our 3+1 bachelor's degree and 4+1 dual degree options prepare students for rewarding careers in this growing field.
Neuroscience (Minor)
Our minor in neuroscience explores the brain, nervous system and behavior. Designed to complement any major, our curriculum is geared toward students planning to pursue graduate study in biology, psychology or neuroscience, or for those with a serious interest in the field.
Pharmacy (3+3 Dual Degree)
Our partnership with the University of Saint Joseph offers a pathway for students to earn their Doctor of Pharmacy in six years. Students complete three years of study in biology or biochemistry at Salve Regina, followed by three years in Saint Joseph's Pharm.D. program.
